Setup & Activation Guide
Comprehensive guides for vehicle radios, mobile apps, streaming, and device compatibility — all in plain language.
Activation Overview
Activating a satellite radio receiver connects your specific hardware to an active subscription plan. Every satellite radio has a unique Radio ID (sometimes called an ESN, SID, or XACT ID) that identifies it on the network. The activation process links this ID to your account and authorizes the signal to be decoded by your receiver.
- 1
Find Your Radio ID
Power on your receiver and navigate to the Preview channel (channel 0) or check the "About" menu. The Radio ID is typically an 8-character alphanumeric code. It may also appear on a sticker on the device itself.
- 2
Choose an Activation Method
You can activate online through the official SiriusXM website, via the SiriusXM app, or by phone. Online activation is generally fastest.
- 3
Enter Your Radio ID
During the activation process you'll be asked to enter your Radio ID along with personal information to create or link your account.
- 4
Select a Subscription Plan
Choose the plan that best fits your needs. Options typically include vehicle-only, streaming-only, or all-access plans that combine both.
- 5
Wait for Signal Delivery
After activation is confirmed, a signal is broadcast to your receiver. Keep your vehicle parked outside with the antenna unobstructed. This can take anywhere from a few minutes to 45 minutes.
- 6
Confirm on Channel 1
Tune to channel 1 (the preview/welcome channel). If you hear programming, your activation was successful.
Vehicle Setup Guide
Most modern vehicles include a factory-installed satellite radio tuner. Here's how to get it up and running.
- 1
Confirm Your Vehicle Has a Satellite Radio Tuner
Check your vehicle's infotainment system for a "SAT" button or mode. Your owner's manual will also specify if satellite radio is included. Some trim levels include it; others may require an upgrade or add-on.
- 2
Locate the Antenna
Most factory antennas are shark-fin style mounts on the roof, or integrated into the glass. Aftermarket antennas for add-on tuners are usually magnetic mount units placed on the roof.
- 3
Park the Vehicle Outside
For the best activation signal reception, park outdoors with the roof antenna facing open sky. Garages and parking structures can block the satellite signal.
- 4
Find the Radio ID on the Head Unit
Navigate to SAT mode on your infotainment system. Tune to channel 0 or the "PREVIEW" channel to find the Radio ID displayed on screen.
- 5
Activate Through Official Channels
Use the Radio ID to activate online or by phone. If your vehicle came with a complimentary trial, it may already be active — tune to any channel to check.
App Setup Guide
The SiriusXM app allows you to stream satellite radio on your smartphone or tablet. An active subscription that includes streaming access is required.
- 1
Download the Official App
Search for the SiriusXM app in the Apple App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android). Download and install the official app from Sirius XM Radio Inc.
- 2
Create or Sign In to Your Account
If you already have a subscription, use the email address and password linked to your account. New subscribers can create an account during the sign-in process.
- 3
Verify Your Subscription Includes Streaming
Not all subscription tiers include app access. If your plan is vehicle-only, you may need to upgrade or add streaming to your package.
- 4
Allow Required Permissions
Grant the app permission to use audio, background playback, and (optionally) location for local content features. These are needed for full functionality.
- 5
Browse and Play
Once signed in, you can browse channels by category, set favorites, and play content. Use the search bar to find specific shows, artists, or channels.
Online Streaming Setup
You can also stream satellite radio directly from a web browser on your computer — no app download required.
- 1
Visit the SiriusXM Website
Go to siriusxm.com using a modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge). Older browsers may not support the streaming player.
- 2
Sign In to Your Account
Click "Sign In" and enter your account credentials. If you've forgotten your password, use the password reset option.
- 3
Navigate to the Player
After signing in, access the listening player. You can browse channels, search content, and manage your listening queue from the browser interface.
- 4
Check Audio Output
Ensure your computer's audio is not muted and the browser has permission to play audio. Some browsers require you to click once on the page before audio playback begins.
