Subscription Overview

Satellite radio subscriptions are generally sold on a recurring billing basis — monthly or annually. The subscription authorizes a specific Radio ID (your hardware) and/or your online account to decode and stream satellite radio programming.

Subscriptions are typically account-based, meaning one account can potentially manage multiple subscriptions for different vehicles or devices, billed together or separately.

Vehicle (Satellite) Plan

Authorizes the in-car radio receiver tied to your vehicle. Programming is delivered via satellite signal. Requires an active subscription and a receiver with a compatible antenna.

Streaming Plan

Allows listening via the official app on smartphones, tablets, and computers. Delivered over the internet rather than satellite. An active data connection is required.

All-Access Plan

Combines satellite reception with streaming access. Typically the most comprehensive option — listen in your car and on your phone with a single subscription.

Trial Subscriptions

Many new vehicles include a complimentary trial period. After the trial ends, you need to subscribe to continue service. Trial terms vary — check your vehicle documentation.

Managing Your Plan

Most subscription management is handled directly through your SiriusXM online account or by contacting customer service. Common account management actions include:

  • Upgrading Your Plan

You can generally upgrade from a vehicle-only plan to an all-access plan at any time. The price difference is typically prorated for the remainder of your current billing period.

  • Downgrading Your Plan

Downgrading to a lower-tier plan is possible, but may take effect at the next renewal date rather than immediately, depending on the terms of your current subscription.

  • Adding More Radios

You can typically add additional vehicles or radios to your account at a discounted "Family Plan" rate. Each additional radio requires its own Radio ID for activation.

  • Updating Payment Information

Payment details can be updated in your online account settings. Keeping payment information current prevents unexpected service interruptions.

  • Cancellation

Subscription cancellation is typically handled by phone or through your online account. After cancellation, service generally continues through the end of the paid billing period.

Billing Basics

Understanding how satellite radio billing works can help you avoid surprises on your statement.

Billing TopicGeneral Information
Billing Cycle OptionsMonthly, quarterly, semi-annual, or annual billing cycles are commonly available. Annual plans typically offer a lower effective monthly rate.
Auto-RenewalMost subscriptions auto-renew at the end of each billing cycle using the payment method on file. You should receive an email reminder before renewal.
Promotional RatesIntroductory rates may apply for the first period. After the promotional period ends, the subscription renews at the standard rate unless cancelled or changed.
Taxes and FeesPublished subscription prices may not include applicable taxes, state and local fees, or a U.S. Music Royalty Fee. Your actual billed amount may be higher than the advertised rate.
Prepaid PlansSome plans are available as prepaid (no auto-renewal). Service ends when the prepaid period expires unless you renew manually.
Refund PolicyRefund eligibility varies. For prepaid plans, refunds may not be available. Monthly auto-renew plans may offer prorated refunds in certain situations. Contact SiriusXM for specifics.
Tip: Always read your subscription agreement carefully, particularly the auto-renewal terms and any fees beyond the base plan price. Set a calendar reminder before your renewal date if you're considering cancellation.

Renewal Information

  • 📅

    When Does My Plan Renew?

Your renewal date is the anniversary of your initial subscription start date. You can find this in your online account dashboard or on the confirmation email you received when you subscribed.

  • 📧

    Renewal Notifications

SiriusXM typically sends email reminders before auto-renewal. Ensure your email address on file is current to receive these notices. Also check your spam folder if you don't receive expected emails.

  • 💳

    Failed Payment

If the payment on file is declined at renewal, your service may be suspended. You'll typically receive an email notification. Update your payment method promptly to restore service without needing to reactivate.

  • 🔄

    Reactivating After Lapse

If your subscription lapses completely, reactivation typically follows the same process as a new activation. Your Radio ID remains associated with your account, making reactivation faster than a brand-new subscriber.

Common Billing Questions

Advertised subscription prices are typically base rates before applicable taxes, state and local government fees, and the U.S. Music Royalty Fee. These additional charges can add several dollars to your monthly bill. Your actual total is itemized on your billing statement.
Some subscription plans offer the ability to suspend service temporarily — useful if you're not using your vehicle for an extended period (snowbird situation, vehicle in storage, etc.). This option may not be available on all plans. Contact SiriusXM customer service to inquire whether a pause option exists for your specific plan.
When you sell your vehicle, you should contact SiriusXM to either cancel the subscription or transfer it to your new vehicle's Radio ID. The subscription is tied to the Radio ID (receiver), not the physical vehicle, so you can typically transfer it. Without action, the subscription will continue billing you for the old vehicle's Radio ID.
Contact SiriusXM customer service promptly after noticing an unwanted charge. Refund eligibility depends on the subscription terms, how long after the renewal the request is made, and whether service was used during the period. Acting quickly after a renewal charge improves your chances of receiving a refund.
